The Story of Landoll’s Mohican Castle

A Legacy of Vision, Devotion, and Timeless Imagination

It began with a dream—born in Europe, built in America.

During a two-year military tour in the 1960s, U.S. Army veteran Jim Landoll was captivated by the grandeur of the castles that dotted the European countryside. Moved by their majesty and permanence, he made a quiet promise to himself: If I ever have the means, I will build a castle of my own in the United States.

That dream would rest on the shoulders of a self-made entrepreneur.

In the early 1970s, Jim founded The Landoll Publishing Company with just $5 in his pocket. With the help of his then-wife Marta Landoll and her brother Marty Myers, Jim built the business from the ground up. Through hard work, vision, and relentless determination, the company became the second-largest publisher of children’s books in the U.S., generating $100 million in annual sales and employing over 1,000 people by 1996.

When the company was sold in 1997, Jim turned his focus back to the dream that started it all: a castle.

Originally envisioned as a castle-themed barn, the idea quickly evolved—and with Marta’s influence, it became something much more ambitious: a luxury hotel unlike anything else in Ohio. Jim led the project with boldness and clarity, overseeing construction decisions as the castle took shape—built without formal blueprints, just vision and determination. The now Ross Suite became the sawmill, where hardwoods from the property were transformed into cabinetry, trim, and floors. Stone from settler-era piles was used to form the majestic exterior.

As the structure rose from the hillside, it became a place of wonder—not only for future guests, but for the Landoll family. The son of Jim and Marta, Jimmy Landoll, then a young boy, often played hide-and-seek in the castle’s unfinished halls with his friends—never imagining that one day, he would help shape its future.

In 2002, Landoll’s Mohican Castle opened to the public—rising 1,200 feet above sea level on 30 forested acres, a mountaintop retreat born from imagination and built with care.

Jim officially retired from daily operations in 2007, and Marta stepped in to lead, guiding the castle with her signature attention to detail, business insight, and unmatched work ethic. She helped the property evolve into a luxury destination for weddings, events, and dining, and continues to serve as Chief Financial Officer, ensuring the castle’s ongoing success.

In 2013, Jimmy Landoll became General Manager, and in 2021, he was named CEO. His impact has been profound. Jimmy led the development of The Stable Suites, opened in 2018, and played a pivotal role in establishing Landoll’s as one of the premier wedding venues in America, hosting hundreds of fairytale celebrations each year.

Jimmy also oversaw the transformation of The Copper Mug Grille into a destination restaurant and led the creation of the Mary Frances Banquet Hall, which opened in 2024. Located just beside the Copper Mug, it offers an elegant, flexible space for private events and celebrations.

Set to open in Summer 2025 within the lower level of the Mary Frances is the Crown and Cauldron Mercantile—a gift shop and boutique offering curated keepsakes, artisan goods, and castle-inspired merchandise to guests from around the world.

Today, Jimmy’s own children have begun working on property, ushering in a third generation of Landoll family involvement—further cementing the castle’s identity as a living, evolving legacy.

Supporting that vision is General Manager Joe Cummins, a dedicated hospitality professional who brings his talents to the resort operations, event execution, and team leadership. Joe plays a vital role in upholding the day-to-day excellence the castle is known for—from overseeing weddings and group events to ensuring every guest enjoys a memorable, personalized experience.

With Jimmy Landoll as CEO and Joe Cummins as General Manager, Landoll’s Mohican Castle continues to grow, while honoring its roots and the vision that built it.

What began as Jim Landoll’s dream, was brought to life through his leadership, Marta’s devotion, and Jimmy’s innovation. Together, this family created not just a castle—but a place where history, imagination, and hospitality live in harmony.

Landoll’s Mohican Castle is more than a destination.
It is a storybook written in stone—and its most magical chapters are still to come.
